What is Residential Energy Storage?

Household energy storage systems are designed to store energy in households, typically used in conjunction with a household photovoltaic (PV) system to supply electricity to the residence. Throughout the day, the electricity generated by the PV system is primarily used for loads, while any excess energy is stored in a battery. If there is still surplus electricity available, it can be optionally connected to the grid. Conversely, during nighttime when the PV system is inactive, the battery discharges to provide electricity for loads.

What Certifications are Required for Residential ESS?

Energy storage is an important technology and basic equipment to support the new power system, which has strict certification standards in different countries and regions.

There are 4 main types of certification systems:

1. North America: UL certification system

2. Europe: CE certification system

3. Australia: CEC certification system

4.  Japan: JIS certification system

UL Certificates

UL certification is mainly for safety testing, as the joint national standard of the United States and Canada, it has very high recognition in the field of energy storage.

UL 1973:Tests for lithium battery packs, including combustion tests, overcharge protection tests, over discharge protection tests, temperature shock tests, etc., to ensure that the battery packs can operate safely in all kinds of extreme environments.

UL 9540:represents the functional safety certification of a packaged complete energy storage system, focusing on mechanical testing, electrical testing and environmental testing.

CE Certificate

IEC/EN 62619: Safety testing of energy storage batteries and battery systems, which not only conducts safety tests on cells and battery modules for external short-circuit, impact, drop, thermal abuse, over-charging, forced discharge, etc., but also evaluates the Battery Management System (BMS) for its functions of over-charging voltage protection, over-charging current protection, over-heating protection, and resistance to the spreading of thermal runaway.

IEC/EN 62477 or IEC/EN 62109: General standards for safety of energy storage PCS, which mainly cover requirements for protection against electric shock, energy, fire, thermal damage, mechanical and noise damage, and environmental stresses that may be generated during operation, storage and transportation of the product.

VDE 2510: A mandatory certification for the German market, covering the vast majority of safety risks involved in energy storage systems, including electrical safety, battery safety, electromagnetic compatibility, functional safety, energy management, transportation safety, installation safety, decommissioning management, etc. In May 2018, a new standard for low-voltage grid-connectivity requirements for energy storage systems, VDE-AR-E 2510-2, was released, which extends the energy storage system's safety requirements to the grid side.

UN38.3 Certificate

UN38.3 is the Dangerous Goods Transportation Certification for lithium batteries, which applies globally and is a safety and performance test.
